Preparation for Adulthood

Preparation for adulthood in primary and secondary education is important part of student’s journey at Portland. Children and young people gradually develop the skills, confidence, and understanding they need to live safe, independent, and fulfilling lives.

In primary school, preparation for adulthood lays the foundations. Students begin to develop basic life skills such as communication, self-care, emotional regulation, and understanding rules and routines. Early learning about safety, friendships, responsibility, and decision-making helps children build confidence and resilience. Introducing these ideas early supports positive habits and attitudes that pupils carry with them as they grow.

In secondary school, preparation for adulthood becomes more explicit and practical. Students learn how to manage increasing independence, including travel safety, money awareness, health and wellbeing, relationships, and preparing for work or further education. This stage is crucial for helping them understand real-life responsibilities and make informed choices about their future. Supporting employability skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and self-advocacy.

Across both phases, preparation for adulthood is vitally important as it:

  • Supports independence and life skills development
  • Builds confidence and resilience
  • Promotes safety, wellbeing, and responsible decision-making
  • Helps pupils understand their role in society
  • Prepares young people for education, employment, and independent living

At Portland, we ensure that learning is meaningful and relevant, enabling pupils to successfully transition into adulthood with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive.
