PHSE/RSHE

As part of the statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) curriculum, students may engage in learning that includes sensitive or explicit content appropriate to their age, maturity, and developmental needs. All content is taught in line with Department for Education statutory guidance and is factual, medically accurate, inclusive, and delivered in a respectful and age-appropriate manner that safeguards students’ wellbeing.

  • Relationships Education is statutory for all primary students, and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is statutory for all secondary students.
  • Health Education is statutory for all students.
  • Sex education is not compulsory in primary schools beyond the statutory content within Relationships Education, and parents/carers/guardians have the right to withdraw their child from non-statutory elements of sex education.

At secondary level, parents/carers/guardians may request to withdraw their child from sex education (outside of statutory content); however, students have the right to opt into sex education from three terms before their 16th birthday, in line with statutory guidance.

At Portland, we aim to work in partnership with parents/carers/guardians, providing information about the curriculum content in advance. Requests for withdrawal will be considered respectfully and in accordance with statutory requirements, and alternative educational provision will be made where appropriate.
